The Kamasins were a small Samoyedic people of the Sayan foothills in southern Siberia, recorded from the 17th century along the Kan and Mana rivers south of the modern city of Krasnoyarsk, who were absorbed into the surrounding Russian and Khakas population over the 19th and 20th centuries. Their language died with its last fluent speaker in 1989. They matter out of proportion to their numbers because they were among the last Samoyedic speakers still living in the region most linguists treat as the Samoyedic homeland. The Nenets, Enets, Nganasan and Selkup all moved north long ago. The Kamasins, together with the Mators and Koibals, stayed in the mountains, and their speech preserved a southern branch of the family that is now entirely gone.
There were two branches. The taiga Kamasins lived by hunting sable, squirrel and elk, fishing the mountain rivers, and keeping small herds of reindeer in the distinctive Sayan style, where the animals were ridden and loaded as pack stock rather than driven in the thousands. They gathered pine nuts and dug sarana lily bulbs as a starch staple. The steppe Kamasins to the south took up horse and cattle breeding from their Turkic neighbors, were speaking Turkic by the 19th century, and merged into the Khakas. When Cossack detachments reached the Kan in the 1620s, the Kamasins were folded into the fur tribute system and later nominally baptized into Orthodoxy, though shamans kept working in the taiga villages. Matthias Castren met them in 1847 and recorded the language while it still had a community behind it. By the time the Finnish linguist Kai Donner reached the village of Abalakovo in 1912, he found a handful of elderly speakers and a people who dressed, farmed and prayed like their Russian neighbors. The last speaker, Klavdiya Plotnikova, outlived everyone she could talk to. Estonian linguists recorded her in the 1960s and 1970s, and she is reported to have said she spoke Kamassian only to God, since no one else was left to hear it. People of Kamasin descent still live around Abalakovo and in the Sayan foothills of Krasnoyarsk Krai, counted as Russians or Khakas, with the old name surviving mainly in family memory and in the linguistic record.
