About Kets People
The Kets are an indigenous people of central Siberia living along the middle and lower Yenisei River and its tributaries in Krasnoyarsk Krai, Russia. The Kets were mobile hunters, fishers, and trappers of the taiga, moving seasonally between the great river and the forest interior. Society was built on patrilineal clans, and their rich shamanic and animist tradition peopled the world with spirits of sky, earth, water, and forest. Ket cosmology set a sky god, Es, against darker powers such as Hosedam, and the tradition is preserved in a distinctive body of myth and folklore.
Appearance and adornment
Traditional Ket clothing was made for a harsh continental climate from the hides and furs of the animals they hunted, including robes, parkas, and fur boots, along with garments of fish skin and later trade cloth. Clothing was trimmed with fur and simple ornament, and women wore bead and metal jewelry with braided hair.
Heritage today
Soviet collectivization and boarding schools disrupted Ket language transmission, and Ket is now critically endangered. It is the sole survivor of the Yeniseian family, whose other members, among them Yugh, Kott, Arin, Assan, and Pumpokol, fell silent over the past few centuries. The Kets live today in Siberian settlements in modern dress, and scholars and community members work to record the language and its unusual grammar and to sustain traditional knowledge.
