Community tradition places their origin on the Saurashtra peninsula of present-day Gujarat. The story is one of repeated departures: out of Gujarat in a time of raids and upheaval, a stay in the Deccan around Devagiri, then work as weavers for the Vijayanagara court. After that empire fell in 1565, the weavers followed its successor states south, and the Nayak rulers of Madurai hired them to make silk for temples and palaces. Madurai became their center and still is.
Language is the clearest marker. Saurashtra is an Indo-Aryan language related to Gujarati, but after centuries surrounded by Dravidian speech it has taken in a great deal of Tamil, Telugu and Kannada vocabulary. It has its own Brahmic script, now in Unicode, though most speakers who write it use Tamil letters or Devanagari. Reviving that script has come up again and again as a community cause.

Venkataramana Bhagavatar, a Saurashtra disciple of the composer Tyagaraja, is credited with preserving much of his teacher's work.
Weaving is no longer the only way Saurashtra families make a living, and many have moved into trade, business and salaried work. But the craft is still tied to their name, above all Madurai's sungudi, a tie-dyed sari covered in small dots left by tied knots of cloth. The community also gave Tamil cinema one of its best-known playback voices, T. M. Soundararajan.
