About Sakuddei People
The Sakuddei are not a nation or a tribe in the usual sense. They are a single uma, a clan community of the Mentawai people, living in the forested interior of Siberut, the largest of the Mentawai Islands off the west coast of Sumatra. The word uma names both the kin group and the big communal longhouse it builds on a riverbank, and for the Sakuddei the two are hard to separate: the house is the group. Outsiders know the name mainly because the Dutch anthropologist Reimar Schefold lived with them from the late 1960s, and because a 1974 British documentary in the Disappearing World series put it in the title.
They speak a dialect of Mentawai, an Austronesian language of the Sumatran barrier islands, quite distinct from the Minangkabau and Indonesian spoken by traders and officials from the mainland. What marks the Sakuddei out among Mentawai clans is a choice. After independence the Indonesian government banned the island religion, Arat Sabulungan, pressed people to register as Christian or Muslim, moved clans into planned villages, and discouraged tattoos, long hair and loincloths. The Sakuddei withdrew upriver and carried on.
Arat Sabulungan holds that everything has a soul: people, pigs, sago palms, a dugout canoe, a house post. A soul that is neglected or startled may wander off, and sickness follows, so much of daily life is about keeping things on good terms with each other. Felling a tree, killing a monkey or raising a new house all call for ritual, and the great clan festival, the puliaijat, can suspend ordinary work for weeks. A rimata leads ceremonies, but decisions are talked out among the adults until everyone can live with them.
The economy is sago, taro, bananas, pigs, chickens, river fishing, and hunting with bows and poisoned arrows. Traditionally there was no rice, no pottery and no weaving: food is cooked in bamboo, and cloth is beaten from bark. Bodies are treated as something the soul should enjoy living in, which is the stated reason for the fine line tattoos, the flowers and beads, and the old practice of chiseling teeth to points. Logging concessions reached Siberut in the 1970s, and part of the island has since become a national park. The pressures now come less from decrees than from schools, churches, cash and trekking tourists downstream.
