About Kadazan People
The Kadazan are the coastal, rice-farming heart of Sabah's largest indigenous population, and their name has long been as much a political argument as a label. Their home ground is the flat wet-rice country of Penampang and Papar on the west coast of Malaysian Borneo, now pressed up against the sprawl of Kota Kinabalu. Upriver and in the hills live the Dusun, who speak closely related dialects and share most of the same beliefs. Lowland communities tended to call themselves Kadazan and upland ones Dusun, until politics forced the question. In the 1950s and 1960s Donald Stephens, later the first Chief Minister of Sabah, promoted Kadazan as a name for all of them. In 1989 the community's cultural association settled on the combined name Kadazandusun, which most official bodies use today. The language belongs to the Dusunic branch of the Austronesian family. A standardized Kadazandusun is taught in schools, but in town it competes hard with Malay and English.
Rice is where belief and daily life meet. In the old religion the creator Kinoingan sacrificed his daughter Huminodun to end a famine, food plants sprang from her body, and her spirit lives on in the grain as Bambaazon. Most Kadazan are now Christian, and Roman Catholicism has had deep roots in Penampang since the late nineteenth century. There is also a Muslim minority. The rice story outlasted conversion anyway. Kaamatan, the harvest festival that peaks on the last two days of May, is a public holiday in Sabah, and its Unduk Ngadau contest chooses a young woman to honor Huminodun's memory.
