About Proto-Malay People
Proto-Malay names a population that may never have existed as a distinct people: a supposed first wave of settlers into the Malay Peninsula and the islands around it, placed thousands of years before the present by the men who proposed it. Around the turn of the twentieth century, European naturalists working in the archipelago argued that the Malay world had been peopled in two movements, an older inland stock they called Proto-Malay and a later coastal one they called Deutero-Malay, the latter credited with metal, trade, states and Islam. The scheme was tidy, it flattered the coast at the expense of the interior, and it went into school textbooks across Malaysia and Indonesia, where generations learned its dates as settled fact. Linguistics and genetics have not borne it out. The Austronesian expansion into Island Southeast Asia was a long process of movement and mixing with peoples already living there, not two clean arrivals.
What survives is the word, and it still does administrative work. In Malaysia, Proto-Malay, or Melayu Asli, is one of the three official divisions of the Orang Asli alongside the Negrito and the Senoi, and it covers six communities: the Temuan, Semelai, Jakun, Orang Kanaq, Orang Kuala and Orang Seletar. Those communities are very much alive, and they are not one people. The category cuts across language families. Most of them speak Malayic tongues, but the Semelai speak an Aslian language, Austroasiatic rather than Austronesian, a completely separate linguistic ancestry sitting inside the same government box.
The lives behind the label are specific. The Semelai are the people of Tasek Bera, the peninsula's largest natural lake, a shallow drowned forest of sedge and blackwater. The Orang Seletar lived aboard boats in the Johor Strait within sight of Singapore's towers and moved ashore only in recent generations. The Orang Kanaq are among the smallest recognized ethnic groups anywhere. The Temuan, the largest of the six, gave Malaysian law its landmark Indigenous land case when villagers displaced by an airport highway sued the state of Selangor and won recognition of native title in 2002.
