About Peranakan Chinese People
Peranakan is Malay for locally born, and that is the point. The Peranakan Chinese descend from Chinese traders, mostly Hokkien men from southern Fujian, who settled in the ports of the Malay world over several centuries and married local women. The heartland runs along the Strait of Malacca. Malacca, Penang and Singapore were grouped by the British as the Straits Settlements, which gave the community its other name, Straits Chinese. Babas in Malacca and Singapore developed Baba Malay, a creole built on Malay with a heavy layer of Hokkien words. Penang went the other way: families kept Hokkien at home and folded Malay and English into it. In Java, Peranakan families spoke local Malay and Javanese. From the late nineteenth century they ran a lively Malay-language press and published novels that fed into modern Indonesian literature. Smaller branches live in Kelantan, in Tangerang outside Jakarta, where the Cina Benteng keep up gambang kromong music, and around Phuket in southern Thailand.
Faith follows the same blend. Most families kept ancestor veneration and Chinese folk, Taoist and Buddhist observance, while many became Christian, particularly in Singapore and Indonesia. Under British rule the Straits Chinese were English-educated and commercially powerful, and so visibly loyal that they were nicknamed the King's Chinese. Indonesia was harder. Dutch colonial law set the Chinese apart as a separate class, and Suharto's New Order pushed Chinese Indonesians to drop Chinese names and public expression until the restrictions eased after 1998.
The material culture is what most people notice first. Nyonya cooking joins Chinese technique to Malay spice pastes. Ayam buah keluak, for one, uses a black nut that is toxic until it has been processed for weeks. Traditional weddings could run twelve days and included the chiu thau, a hair-combing rite held on the eve of the wedding to mark the passage into adulthood.
