Their country is steep and deeply folded, with ridges and river gorges running between the Tedim hills to the north and the Lai country around Hakha to the south. Villages sit high on the slopes. For generations people moved their fields, clearing hillside plots for maize, millet and upland rice. They measured wealth in mithun, the big half-tame hill cattle.
