About Pardhi People
The Pardhi are a people whose name is their trade. In Marathi, paradh means the hunt, and for as long as anyone has written about them the Pardhi have been the trappers and hunters living at the edge of village life across central and western India: Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat, and adjoining districts of Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. They took partridge, quail, hare and blackbuck with snares, nets, decoy birds and a repertoire of imitated calls, and sold the catch in village markets. The sub-groups tell the same story. Two laws shaped modern Pardhi life more than anything else. In 1871 the British listed them under the Criminal Tribes Act, which made every member a suspect by birth, obliged to report to the police and live under watch.
