The Nanai people are a Tungusic-speaking indigenous group of the lower Amur River basin, living mainly in Khabarovsk Krai in the Russian Far East, with related communities (known as the Hezhe or Hezhen) across the border in Heilongjiang, China. They number roughly twelve thousand in Russia and speak Nanai, a Southern Tungusic language now fluent among only a minority of elders. Historically they were called Goldi.

Society and subsistence

Nanai life has long centered on the great salmon runs of the Amur and its tributaries. Families fished from birch-bark and dugout canoes, hunted forest game, trapped fur animals for trade, and used dog teams and sledges in winter. Dried and stored fish carried households and their dogs through the cold months. Settlements were arranged in riverside villages, and social organization rested on patrilineal clans that regulated marriage, mutual aid, and ritual. Traditional belief combined animism and shamanism, with shamans mediating between the human world and the spirits of river, forest, and ancestors.

Appearance and adornment

The Nanai are historically renowned for clothing sewn from fish skin, especially salmon and carp hides softened, worked, and stitched into robes, coats, and footwear. Festive garments were decorated with curvilinear appliqué and embroidery in spiral and scroll motifs shared across the Amur peoples. Robes wrapped left over right and were closed with cloth or metal fastenings, and women wore embroidered bibs and ornaments of shell, bead, and metal.

Heritage today

Under Russian and later Soviet rule the Nanai shifted toward collective fishing, wage work, and Russian-language schooling, and Orthodox Christianity spread alongside older beliefs. The Nanai hunter Dersu Uzala, who guided the explorer Vladimir Arsenyev through the Ussuri taiga, became widely known through Arsenyev's books and a later film, drawing outside attention to the peoples of the Amur. Today most Nanai live in modern dress and speak Russian, while cultural associations, museums, and folk ensembles work to revive the language, fish-skin craft, and traditional song and dance.
