About Muria People
The Muria are Gond people of Bastar, the forested southern block of Chhattisgarh where the Indravati cuts through sal and bamboo. Like most Gonds they call themselves Koitor among themselves; Muria marks them off from neighbors such as the Dandami Maria and the Hill Maria of Abujhmarh, who share the language but not the same set of institutions. Gondi is Dravidian, a South-Central relative of Telugu, which leaves the Muria on the far side of a linguistic border from nearly everyone around them. The working language of Bastar markets is Halbi, an Indo-Aryan contact tongue, and Chhattisgarhi and Hindi arrive through school and trade. Plenty of Muria carry three or four.
Religion runs on clan gods and village gods rather than on scripture. Each clan keeps its own deity and its own ritual specialists, the earth shrine and the village shrine take blood sacrifice, and the whole arrangement has been rubbing against Hinduism for centuries through the Danteshwari temple at Dantewada and the Bastar Dussehra, a festival of some seventy five days in which Muria villages are participants rather than spectators. The Muria Durbar held inside it is an assembly where community representatives put grievances directly to whoever holds power that year. It is old, and it still gets used.
Outsiders usually know one thing about the Muria, and they know it secondhand: the ghotul, the youth dormitory Verrier Elwin wrote up in 1947. What the ghotul actually was is a training institution. Members took ranked titles and ran the place themselves, learning drumming, song, dance, work discipline, dispute settlement and how to hold office. Boys carved combs for the girls. Practice varied village to village, and Elwin's fixation on one aspect of it flattened a whole institution into a single sensational fact that has trailed the Muria ever since. Missions, boarding schools and reform pressure wore the ghotul down across the twentieth century; the counterinsurgency and Maoist violence that emptied villages after 2005 finished it in many places, pushing families into camps and over the border into Telangana. Bastar has a long memory for this sort of thing: the Bhumkal rising of 1910 against British and durbar authority, the killing of Maharaja Pravir Chandra Bhanj Deo in 1966, then the last twenty years. Muria households farm rice and millets, gather mahua flowers and tendu leaf for cash, and deal with a state that has spent a century deciding what to do about them.
