About Missouria People

Within two generations the towns were gone. Smallpox went through them repeatedly, and Sauk and Fox war parties broke what remained in the 1790s. The Otoe-Missouria were pushed onto a reservation on the Big Blue River at the Kansas and Nebraska line, then removed again in 1881 to Indian Territory, a move that split them between those who accepted it and the traditionalist Coyote band who refused. Their government now sits at Red Rock, Oklahoma, with a few thousand enrolled citizens. Chiwere lost its last fluent first-language speakers late in the twentieth century, and the tribe has been working since to put it back in the mouths of children who would otherwise only ever meet the name on a road sign.
