About Melungeons People
The Melungeons are not a tribe, a nation, or a language group. They are a cluster of Appalachian families, the Collinses, Gibsons, Goinses, Mullinses, Bunches and Bolens chief among them, who settled the ridges around the Cumberland Gap where Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky meet, and who were marked out by their neighbors as something other than white. Genealogical and genetic work published in 2012 pointed at something plainer: the core lines descend largely from unions between African men and European women in colonial Virginia, formed before the racial law of the slave South had fully hardened, and the families then moved west ahead of it.
Religion on the ridge is Appalachian Protestant, mostly Primitive Baptist, with one unusual chapter. A Presbyterian mission at Vardy ran a church and a school there from the early 1900s into the 1970s and educated generations of children who were welcome almost nowhere else nearby.
The turn came in 1969, when the town of Sneedville staged an outdoor drama called Walk Toward the Sunset and tried to convert a slur into heritage. A wave of popular books in the 1990s pulled in thousands of new claimants and a great deal of bad history along with them.
