About Mekan People
Mekan is the name Amharic speakers long used for this people of southwestern Ethiopia. They call themselves Me'en. Most scholarship now uses that name, and it survives in the names of two districts, Meinit Goldiya and Meinit Shasha. What holds them together is a Surmic language and a shared identity that spans two very different ways of making a living. The Tishena, by far the larger branch, farm the green uplands west of the Omo River, growing maize and sorghum and keeping cattle on the side. The whole region was pulled into the expanding Ethiopian empire at the end of the nineteenth century under Menelik II, which brought northern settlers, tribute demands and slave raiding. Land and relations with the state have been sore points ever since. In the lowlands, large state sugar plantations along the lower Omo have cut into Bodi grazing land since the 2010s.

His charge is rain, harvests and the well-being of the community, not everyday government.
