Its rulers converted to Islam in the early eighteenth century, and the conversion ended up doing the work of a national border. To become Muslim in this corner of the Sahel was, for a long time, to become Wandala, and lineages that took the faith were absorbed into the kingdom rather than merely allied with it. The other half of that ledger is not flattering. The Mandara raided the unconverted highlanders above them for captives, and the memory of it still shapes how the plains and the heights regard each other.
Wandala is a Central Chadic language, Afro-Asiatic, which places it in the same wide family as Hausa and as most of its immediate mountain neighbors, though not close enough for anyone to understand anyone else without effort. Kanuri and Fulfulde have long carried trade, and Arabic carried religion and writing.
