Makaraka country became a named district of Equatoria province, and Makaraka men were recruited as porters and armed auxiliaries. Their name runs through the letters and journals of the officers and travelers who served Egypt there. The Mahdist uprising ended that order, and Anglo-Egyptian rule later folded the area into southern Sudan.
Today most Makaraka are farmers, raising cassava, sorghum, groundnuts, maize and sesame on family plots in some of the most fertile land in the country. Christianity, spread by Catholic and Anglican missions over the twentieth century, is the main faith. Church life shapes schooling, weddings and funerals, though older beliefs about spirits and ancestors were never fully pushed aside. Adio is the language of home. Juba Arabic is the language of the market and English the language of the classroom. The wars have been hard on them. Yei saw fighting during Sudan's long civil war, and again when South Sudan's post-independence conflict reached Equatoria in 2016. Large numbers of people from the area then fled to settlements in northern Uganda and across the border into Congo.
