About Maba People
The Maba are the people of Ouaddaï, the dry uplands of eastern Chad that shade off toward the Sudanese border, and their neighbors have called them by half a dozen other names: Bargo, Borgu, Mabang, Kodoi. What binds them is less descent than a place and the state that grew on it. The Ouaddaï sultanate was founded in the 1630s, when Abd al-Karim displaced the Tunjur rulers who had held the country before him, and for nearly three centuries the Maba were its core population and its ruling stock. Membership was porous at the edges. Neighboring families married in, took up the language, and were Maba within a generation or two, which is why the group reads today as a cluster of clans and absorbed lineages rather than a single lineage tree. The sultanate also lasted longer than most: French columns took Abéché in 1909, the sultan Dud Murra surrendered in 1911, and Ouaddaï goes down as one of the last large African states to be conquered rather than negotiated away.
The language, Maba or Bura Mabang, anchors the small Maban family inside Nilo-Saharan, with Masalit, Runga and Kibet as its closest relatives. It is not a form of Arabic, though it has taken on a great deal of Arabic vocabulary, and Chadian Arabic does the work of a market language across the whole region. Islam came with the sultanate and settled in completely: Sunni, Maliki in law, carried by Quranic schools and by the standing of local scholars, and reinforced in the nineteenth century by the Sanusi order, which traveled down the caravan road from Cyrenaica. That road, Wadai to Benghazi, is the detail worth knowing. Opened in the 1830s, it was among the last trans-Saharan routes to boom, sending ostrich feathers, ivory and captives north and bringing firearms and cloth back, and it kept Ouaddaï rich and armed while the older western routes were fading. The Maba now farm millet and sorghum along seasonal watercourses, keep livestock where the land allows, and live with a border that means more on paper than in practice: their Masalit kin are on the Sudanese side, and since 2003 the war in Darfur has pushed camps and relatives alike into Ouaddaï. A sultan still sits at Abéché, holding the authority of custom rather than of government.
