About Lur People

Lurs comprise approximately 6% of the Iranian population — approximately 5+ million, concentrated in southwestern Iran (Lorestan, Khuzestan, Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, Kohgiluyeh and Boyer-Ahmad provinces). The Luri language is part of the Southwestern Iranian / Indo-Iranian family (closely related to Persian, distinct from Kurdish). Major sub-groups: Bakhtiari (the largest, ~1M+, traditionally pastoral-nomadic), Lur-i Bozorg, Lur-i Kuchak, Boyer-Ahmadi, Mamasani. Predominantly Shia Muslim.
