About Khyang People

They call themselves Hyow. Khyang is the name their neighbors use, and it is the same word that, passed through Burmese, became Chin. That etymology tells most of the story. The Khyang are a western outlier of the Chin world, cut off from their closest relatives, the Asho Chin of lowland western Myanmar, by a national border and several centuries of drift.
Their own account of how they got here is a story about being left behind. A Khyang king, the tradition goes, crossed into these hills from Arakan in a time of war and eventually went back, leaving a pregnant younger queen and a party of followers. Today's Khyang count themselves as the descendants of those who stayed. The language points the same way. Hyow belongs to the southern branch of the Kuki-Chin languages within Sino-Tibetan, close to Asho, distant from the Marma spoken around it, and unrelated to Chakma and Bengali. Most adults are multilingual out of necessity, switching to Marma or Bengali in the market and to Bengali in school. Linguists produced a full description of Hyow only recently, and they class it as endangered: in a speech community this small, a handful of families shifting languages is a measurable loss.
