About Kanaq People

Kanaq tradition traces the group to the Riau-Lingga islands south of Singapore, now part of Indonesia, and the crossing to the Johor mainland is the turning point of their remembered history. The move makes sense on the older map. Johor and Riau were long one sultanate and one maritime world, split into British and Dutch spheres only in 1824, and people moved between islands and river mouths as a matter of routine.
