About Semai People

The Semai are an Orang Asli people of the central mountains of Peninsular Malaysia, living in Perak and Pahang. The largest of the Senoi peoples, they number in the tens of thousands and speak Semai, a Senoic language of the Aslian branch of Austroasiatic. They are widely known in anthropology, especially through Robert Dentan's 1968 study, for a strong cultural emphasis on nonviolence and the peaceful resolution of conflict.

Society and subsistence

The Semai combine swidden farming of hill rice, cassava, and other crops with fishing, foraging, and the hunting of small game, traditionally using the blowpipe and poisoned darts. Settlements are small and egalitarian, without strong hierarchy, and decisions are reached through discussion and consensus. A strong ethic of sharing and of not refusing a reasonable request runs through Semai social life. Belief centers on a world of spirits, on dream experience, and on rules and taboos, notably the idea that mocking or mistreating certain beings can bring violent storms. Healing and contact with the spirit world are the work of adepts known as halaa', who draw on songs learned in dreams during communal singing ceremonies.

Appearance and adornment

Traditionally the Semai wore bark cloth and simple garments of woven fiber, with loincloths and wrapped skirts, and adorned themselves for festivals with headbands, combs, and ornaments of leaves, flowers, plaited fiber, and beads. Faces and bodies were sometimes marked with plant pigment for ceremony and dance.

Heritage today

Since the mid-twentieth century many Semai have settled in fixed villages, taken up cash cropping and wage work, and adopted schooling, and a portion have converted to Christianity or Islam. Many Semai also gather and sell forest produce such as rattan and fruit in local markets. Land pressure and development remain pressing concerns, while the Semai reputation for peaceableness and their forest knowledge continue to attract scholarly and public interest.
