About Kallar People
The Kallar are a Tamil caste community from the dry interior of Tamil Nadu. Their name carries a history they have never run from. Kallar is usually read as thieves, a label British officials used to justify policing them. Many Kallar take it as a mark of people who answered to no one. With the Maravar and the Agamudayar they make up the Mukkulathor, the three clans, and all three use the honorific Thevar. Their heartland runs through Madurai, Theni, Dindigul, Sivaganga, Pudukkottai, Thanjavur and Tiruchirappalli districts, and their language is Tamil.
Before colonial rule, Kallar power rested on kaval, the village watch. Villages paid Kallar watchmen in grain and cash to guard crops and cattle, and the watchman was expected to recover anything stolen. In Pudukkottai a Kallar lineage, the Tondaimans, became kings and ruled a princely state until 1948. Elsewhere the British saw only extortion. Under the Criminal Tribes Act, the Piramalai Kallar around Usilampatti were registered and made to report to the police. At Perungamanallur in 1920, police fired on villagers who refused to be fingerprinted and killed more than a dozen people. The same government later opened Kallar Reclamation schools, and many of those schools still operate in and around Madurai.
The community is not one bloc. Piramalai Kallar, Esanattu Kallar, Gandarvakottai Kallar and other divisions each marry within their own circle and keep their own customs. Many are organized into territorial units called nadu, whose hereditary headmen once settled disputes and still carry weight at festivals. The French anthropologist Louis Dumont built a classic study of South Indian kinship and religion around the Piramalai Kallar.
The Kallar are Hindu, but the gods that matter day to day belong to the lineage and the village: Karuppasamy, Ayyanar and the guardian spirits whose shrines stand at the edge of the fields. Families return to their kula deivam temple for vows, first tonsures and annual festivals. Their best-known religious tie is to Alagar Koil near Madurai. During the Chithirai festival, the god Alagar travels to the Vaigai river dressed as a Kallar, and the crowds call him Kallalagar. Jallikattu, the bull-taming sport of the Madurai country, is still a point of pride in Kallar villages. In the politics of southern Tamil Nadu, the Thevar vote carries real weight.
