About Nadars People
The Nadars are a Tamil community of the far south of India, concentrated in the districts running from Kanyakumari up through Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi and Virudhunagar. For most of recorded history their name was Shanar, and their defining work was the palmyra palm: climbing it with a rope loop around the ankles, tapping the inflorescence for sap, boiling the sap into jaggery or letting it ferment into toddy. It was dangerous, badly paid, and in the eyes of the castes above them ritually polluting, and it fixed the Nadars near the bottom of the Tamil social order. They were kept out of temples, off certain streets, away from schools. Nadar women in Travancore were forbidden to cover their breasts in the presence of higher castes, and the long agitation against that rule, running through the first half of the nineteenth century and settled by royal proclamation in 1859, is remembered as the upper cloth revolt.
What happened next is one of the most closely studied cases of collective self-transformation in South Asia. Nadar traders in the towns north of Madurai, Sivakasi, Virudhunagar, Sattur and their neighbors, pooled money through local associations called uravinmurai, which built markets, wells, schools and temples and taxed their own members to pay for them. The Nadar Mahajana Sangam, founded in 1910, took the model statewide, and a community bank followed at Tuticorin in 1921. By the middle of the twentieth century Nadars ran the match, fireworks and printing industries that made Sivakasi an industrial town, and K. Kamaraj, a Nadar from Virudhunagar, was chief minister of Madras State. The old name went out with the old status: Shanar hardened into a slur, and Nadar, borrowed upward from the landed Nadan lineages, became the name of everybody.
Religion divides them without splitting them. Most are Hindu, largely Shaiva. A substantial minority, heavily concentrated in Kanyakumari, are Protestant or Catholic, descended from nineteenth century mission congregations that gave the community its first schools and much of its early literacy. And the Nadar country is the heartland of Ayyavazhi, the movement founded by Ayya Vaikundar at Swamithoppu in the 1830s, whose centers of worship still draw crowds that no census category handles well.
