Their home is the Ukaguru Mountains in Tanzania's Morogoro Region, a block of the Eastern Arc range that lifts out of dry plains and catches enough rain to farm reliably. Below them, through the nineteenth century, ran the caravan road from Bagamoyo toward Lake Tanganyika, and with it came coastal traders, cloth, Islam, firearms and slave raiding. Maasai pressed down from the north, Ngoni and Hehe up from the south. The escarpment was the answer to all of it. Ukaguru means the country of the Kaguru, and the country and the people are difficult to talk about separately.
They speak Chikagulu, a Bantu language of the northeast coastal cluster, near enough to Luguru, Sagara, Vidunda and Zigua that outsiders have long lumped the lot together, and clearly distinct from Gogo, spoken by their neighbors to the west. Swahili now carries most public life, and Chikagulu has retreated to older speakers and the household. Descent is matrilineal. Clan membership, land claims and inheritance pass through the mother, so a man's heirs are his sister's children and not his own, which puts real authority in the hands of the maternal uncle and creates a standing tension the Kaguru discuss openly, in proverb and in complaint. Boys and girls are secluded and instructed by senior kin, and the teaching is delivered in riddles, songs and deliberately veiled speech, a moral education in obligation and restraint and what adults owe one another. For a people of their size the Kaguru are unusually well documented, largely because the anthropologist T. O. Beidelman spent a career on their thought, their stories and their arguments. Today most farm maize, sorghum and beans on the slopes, trade at Gairo, and send working members down to Morogoro and Dar es Salaam.
