About Nara People
The Nara are a small Muslim people of Eritrea's western lowlands, and the first thing to know about them is their name. For generations outsiders called them Barya, a word that means "slave" in the Semitic languages of the region. Nara is what they call themselves, and it is the name the Eritrean state uses when it lists them among the country's nine recognized ethnic groups.
Their home is Gash-Barka, a stretch of hot savanna and seasonal riverbeds running up to the Sudanese frontier. Most Nara live in villages and farm the way lowland people here long have, with sorghum and millet in the rainy months and cattle and goats the rest of the year. Their language stands apart from the others around it. It belongs to the Eastern Sudanic branch of the Nilo-Saharan family, which makes it a distant cousin of Nubian far down the Nile and unrelated to Tigre and Tigrinya next door. Kunama, spoken by the Nara's closest neighbors in the lowlands, is not a near relative either. In practice many Nara move easily between their own language, Tigre and Arabic. Islam, Sunni and nearly universal, took hold during the nineteenth century as Egyptian and Sudanese influence pushed into the lowlands. The Nara recognize four branches, Higir, Mogareb, Koyta and Santora, and the dialects of the language follow the same lines.
The twentieth century hit the western lowlands hard. Eritrea's armed struggle for independence began in this region in 1961, and three decades of fighting, reprisals and displacement sent many lowland families into refugee camps across the border in Sudan. Independence, won in 1991, gave the Nara formal recognition as a people with their own language and a named place in the national order. They remain one of the smallest of Eritrea's nine groups, and their language is spoken almost nowhere else.
