About Kafficho People
The Kafficho are the people of Kafa, the green, rain-soaked highland of southwestern Ethiopia. Many people know the place's name without realizing it. A popular story ties the word coffee to Kafa. Linguists mostly trace the word to Arabic qahwa instead, but wild coffee really does grow in these forests, and picking it is still ordinary household work. What makes the Kafficho a people, though, is less the bean than the memory of a kingdom. For about five centuries Kafa was an independent monarchy with a sacred kingship and a reputation for keeping outsiders at arm's length.
That independence ended in 1897, when the armies of Emperor Menelik II conquered the kingdom and captured its last king, Gaki Sherocho. War and slave raiding followed and emptied much of the countryside. For most of the century that came after, the Kafficho lived on the edge of the Ethiopian state. Today they number more than a million, centered on the Kaffa Zone and its capital, Bonga.
Their language, Kafa, or Kafi noono, is Omotic. That branch of Afroasiatic is found almost nowhere outside southwestern Ethiopia. Its closest relatives are spoken by the Shekkacho and the Shinasha. Those languages are what remains of a once wider Gonga-speaking world that Oromo expansion split apart from the sixteenth century on. Kafa is now written in Ethiopic script and taught in local schools, while Amharic is used for government and trade.
Most Kafficho are Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. There is also a fast-growing Protestant community and a smaller Muslim minority. Older belief persists beneath both, including the eqqo spirit possession tradition that shaped religious life in the kingdom. Kafa society also keeps an old internal hierarchy. The Manjo, who were traditionally hunters, have long been treated as a separate and lower caste. Other Kafficho have refused to eat with them or marry them, and that stigma is still a live social issue.
Daily life follows the forest. Households grow enset, maize and grain in clearings, gather coffee under the tree cover and hang log beehives high in the trees for the forest honey the region is known for. Much of this woodland now lies inside UNESCO's Kafa Biosphere Reserve. The Kafficho homeland holds one of the last large mountain forests Ethiopia has left.
