About Hän People
The Hän take their name from the river. Hän Hwëch'in means "people who live along the river," and the river is the Yukon, along the stretch that runs out of the Klondike country and across the border into Alaska. Their year was built around that water: salmon in summer, caribou of the Fortymile herd crossing in autumn, and moose hunting and trapping through the dark months. Today most Hän live in two communities on either side of an international border. One is Dawson City in Yukon, where they form the core of the Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in First Nation, and the other is Eagle Village in Alaska. Their language belongs to the Northern Athabaskan branch of the Na-Dene family and is closest to Gwich'in. Only a handful of elders still speak it fluently, so much of the work in Dawson now goes into recordings, classes and putting Hän place names back on the land. Most Hän are Christian, the legacy of Anglican missions that reached the upper Yukon in the late 1800s.
The Hän met the outside world all at once. In 1896 gold turned up on a creek that feeds the Klondike, and within two years tens of thousands of gold seekers had poured onto Tr'ochëk, the fish camp at the Klondike's mouth, and into the boomtown of Dawson rising beside it. Chief Isaac, who led the Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in through those years, moved his people a few miles downstream to Moosehide. He is remembered for sending Hän songs and dances to relatives in Alaska for safekeeping. Disease, overhunting and later residential schooling hit hard all the same. The recovery has been deliberate. The Tr'ondëk Hwëch'in signed a land claim and self-government agreement in 1998, and Moosehide now hosts a summer gathering that draws Indigenous visitors from across the North. In 2023 the Tr'ondëk-Klondike landscape was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its gold rush history told partly through Hän eyes. The pressure has not let up: failing chinook salmon runs on the Yukon have forced fishing closures, cutting into the summer season that once shaped their lives.
