The Siouan language faded over that long, quiet stretch, and the community has spoken English for generations.
The modern tribe took shape in the twentieth century, largely against the grain of Jim Crow. North Carolina's segregated order had little patience for a people who insisted they were Indian, and Haliwa families organized in response. In 1957 they opened the Haliwa Indian School, a community effort that gave their children a school of their own. State recognition came in 1965, and the school closed when integration arrived at the end of the decade. A tribal charter school has operated in Hollister since 2000, and the tribe is still pressing for federal acknowledgment.
Everyday life runs through family, church and the tribal calendar. Most members are Protestant Christians, and churches are among the community's main gathering places. The biggest event of the year is the spring powwow on the tribal grounds. It has run for decades and brings drum groups, dancers and relatives who moved away back to Hollister for the weekend.
