About Gottscheers People
For about six hundred years the Gottscheers were a German-speaking island in the forests of southern Slovenia. Slovene villages surrounded them on every side, and no other German community was close. That isolation is what defines them. It kept alive an old dialect, a close Catholic village life and a firm sense of being apart, right up until the Second World War emptied their homeland in a single winter.
Home was the Kočevje plateau, Gottschee in German, a rough karst upland of beech and fir near the present border with Croatia. The Counts of Ortenburg began settling it in the fourteenth century, bringing farmers mainly from Upper Carinthia and East Tyrol to clear land where few people lived. The soil was poor and Ottoman raids wrecked the district again and again, so in 1492 Emperor Frederick III gave the Gottscheers the right to travel and sell livestock, linen and wooden goods of their own making. The Gottscheer peddler became a familiar figure across the Habsburg lands. That habit of leaving home to earn a living carried many to America long before the war.
Their language, Gottscheerish, is a Southern Bavarian dialect that developed on its own for centuries. Other German speakers find it hard to follow, and linguists prize it for medieval features lost elsewhere. Under Austrian rule, standard German was the language of school and print, and the Catholic parish set the rhythm of village life.
The break came in 1941. When the Axis carved up Yugoslavia, Gottschee fell to Italy. Under a German-Italian agreement, nearly all of its roughly twelve thousand Germans were moved to the Brežice and Krško area, which Germany had annexed, onto farms seized from deported Slovenes. In 1945 most fled north as the Reich collapsed, and the new Yugoslav state confiscated their property. Back in Kočevje, many villages were torn down or swallowed by forest, and part of the area stayed a closed zone for decades.
Today the Gottscheers are mostly a diaspora, spread through Austria, Germany, Canada and the United States. In America, Ridgewood in Queens and the Cleveland area became centers of club life, dances and memorial gatherings. A few hundred descendants remain in Slovenia, which does not recognize them as a national minority. Gottscheerish now survives mainly among older speakers, and heritage groups on both sides of the Atlantic are working to record it while they still can.
