About Amantes People
The Amantes were an ancient people of southern Illyria who held the hill country behind the Bay of Vlorë, in present-day Albania, from at least the 4th century BC until Roman rule absorbed them into provincial life, leaving their name attached mainly to their town, Amantia. They lived at a crossroads. The Chaonians of Epirus lay to the south and the Bylliones to the north, and the Greek colonies of Apollonia and Oricum sat on the coast nearby. Much of what is recorded about the Amantes is about dealing with bigger neighbors. Ancient writers placed them in Illyria, while a Greek legend tied their name to the Abantes of Euboea, warriors said to have settled this coast on their way home from Troy. That tale says more about how Greeks explained the peoples around them than about where the Amantes actually came from. Scholars still disagree over where the line between Illyrian and Greek ran in communities like this one.
Whatever the Amantes spoke at home, probably an Illyrian dialect, their public life was conducted in Greek. By the Hellenistic period they were organized as a koinon, a federal community that struck its own coins with the legend ΑΜΑΝΤΩΝ, of the Amantes. Amantia carried on as a provincial town under the empire. In late antiquity it served as a bishop's seat in the province of Epirus Nova, and by then the Amantes no longer existed as a separate political people. Their descendants blended into the wider population of the Roman and Byzantine Balkans. Today their name survives in the ruins above the village of Ploçë.
