About Marrucini People
The Marrucini were an Italic people who lived on the Adriatic side of central Italy, in what is now the province of Chieti in Abruzzo, from at least the sixth century BC until Rome dissolved them into its own citizen body shortly after 89 BC. Their country was small enough to cross on foot in a day: a wedge running inland from the coast along the south bank of the river Aternus, the modern Pescara, toward the limestone wall of the Maiella. Their neighbors were the Vestini across the river, the Paeligni in the mountain basins behind them, and the Frentani down the shore, all close kin, all speaking near versions of the same language. Their principal town was Teate, set on a long hill above the valley, which the Romans renamed Teate Marrucinorum and which is Chieti today. No modern community claims descent from them as a distinct people. The Abruzzesi are their descendants in the flat, unremarkable way that most Italians are descended from somebody the Romans absorbed.
They spoke Marrucinian, a Sabellic tongue of the Italic family, close enough to Paelignian and Marsian that scholars often treat the three as one cluster rather than three languages. Almost none of it survives. The exception is a bronze tablet found near Rapino, cut sometime in the third century BC, which records a religious obligation owed by the touta maroucai, the Marrucine community acting as a political body, and names a goddess Iovia. That is as close to a self-portrait as they left: a people who thought of themselves as a touta, a state, however small. Politically they spent two centuries as Rome's junior partner, allied from 304 BC, steady while Hannibal moved up the peninsula, and then in open revolt in 91 BC alongside the Marsi, Paeligni and Vestini when Rome kept refusing them citizenship. Their commander Herius Asinius was killed in the fighting and the war was beaten down within two years. It was also won: the citizenship came, and with it the end of the Marrucini as anything but a Roman label for a district. The family of Asinius did well out of it. Asinius Pollio, consul, historian and patron of Virgil, is reckoned his grandson, and Catullus could still use Marrucinus in a poem as a name with a whiff of the provinces on it.
