About Dzungars People
The Dzungars were a historical people: a confederation of Oirat Mongol tribes who built the last great nomadic empire of Inner Asia, ruling from the 1630s until Qing armies destroyed them in the 1750s. Their survivors were absorbed into the Oirat populations of Xinjiang, western Mongolia and the Kalmyk steppe. The name comes from the Mongolian for left hand, the wing of the Oirat host they led, and it outlived them: the Junggar Basin of northern Xinjiang still carries it.
Their heartland lay between the Altai and the Tian Shan, steppe, desert and mountain pasture that today spans northern Xinjiang, eastern Kazakhstan and the far west of Mongolia, with the Ili valley as its farmed core. They spoke Oirat, a western Mongolic language, close kin to Khalkha but with its own vowels and vocabulary, and from 1648 they wrote it in the Clear Script, an alphabet the Oirat monk Zaya Pandita devised to fix the ambiguities of the old Mongol script. The ruling house was the Choros clan; the Dörbet and Khoid rode with them, while their Torghut and Khoshut cousins had already left for the Volga and for Tibet's Kokonor plain.
Religion was Gelug Tibetan Buddhism, and it was state business. Galdan, the khanate's most formidable ruler, had trained as a monk in Lhasa under the Fifth Dalai Lama before returning in 1670 to avenge his murdered brother and take power; the Dalai Lama later named him Boshugtu Khan. In 1717 a Dzungar army crossed the Kunlun from Khotan, sacked Lhasa and killed its Khoshut overlord, which pulled the Qing into Tibet for good.
They were not simple horse nomads. They cast their own cannon, taught by Johan Gustaf Renat, a Swedish artilleryman captured at Poltava and captured again by the Dzungars, who spent seventeen years among them and left with maps that gave Europe its first detailed picture of the region. Their raids also emptied the eastern Kazakh steppe; Kazakhs still call 1723 the Years of Great Disaster.
Succession wars after 1745 opened the door. The Qianlong Emperor's campaigns of 1755 to 1758 ended in deliberate extermination: Qing writers themselves put the dead from massacre and smallpox at well over half the population, with most of the rest fleeing to Russia or the Kazakhs. The emptied land was resettled with Manchus, Han, Hui, Sibe, Chahar Mongols and, after 1771, Torghuts returning from the Volga. Today the Ööld of Xinjiang and Mongolia are the nearest thing to Dzungar descendants, and Oirats in Xinjiang still print in the Clear Script.
