About Dungan Kazakhstani People

Dungan Kazakhstanis comprise approximately 0.3% of the Kazakhstan population — approximately 73,000. The Dungan are the Sinophone Muslim ethnic group descended from the post-1862 Dungan Revolt refugees who fled Qing-period China (predominantly Gansu and Shaanxi provinces) to Russian Turkestan. Concentrated in Zhambyl Region near the Kyrgyz border (with the much larger Dungan population of approximately 110,000 in Kyrgyzstan, separately enumerated under KG). The Dungan speak Dungan language (a Northwestern Mandarin / Gansu-Shaanxi-source language with substantial Arabic-Persian-Turkic loanwords, written in Cyrillic 1953-present — the only Sinitic language traditionally written in Cyrillic). Distinct from China's Hui ethnic group (the ancestral source population) by the Cyrillic-Sinitic linguistic tradition and Soviet-era cultural-political context.

Typical Dungan Kazakhstani Phenotypes

Reference for AI generation — hair, eyes, skin, facial structure, build

Phenotype distribution closely matches Northwestern Han Chinese / Hui source populations — Fitzpatrick II-III skin tone, uniformly straight black hair, characteristic East Asian features (epicanthic-fold variants nearly universal, narrower-to-moderate nasal bridges, oval-to-rounded face shapes), brown to dark brown eye color, intermediate build. Subtle population-level distinguishing features from Han Chinese reflect the ~150 years of demographic separation in Central Asia.
