About Dongria Kondh People
The Dongria Kondh are named for the hills they live in. Dongar means hill, and for roughly ten thousand people in southwestern Odisha the hill that matters is Niyamgiri, a forested range straddling Rayagada and Kalahandi districts. They also call themselves Jharnia, protectors of streams, and they mean it literally. The highest peak is the seat of Niyam Raja, the king of law, and the Dongria see themselves as caretakers of his mountain rather than its owners. Some heights are left uncut out of respect for him.
They are one branch of the Kondh, or Kandha, the largest tribal people in Odisha. What sets them apart from the plains-dwelling Desia Kondh and the Kutia Kondh is their hill farming, their dress and their attachment to a single range. Their speech is a Dravidian Kondh dialect usually classed with Kui. It is spoken in a state whose dominant language, Odia, is Indo-Aryan, and Odia is the language of the market. The markets matter. Villagers clear and replant the slopes for pineapples, jackfruit, oranges, bananas, turmeric and millets, then carry much of the harvest on foot to weekly trading towns such as Bissam Cuttack and Chatikona.
Religious life runs through the village, not a temple. A jani leads communal offerings, and bejuni, women shamans, diagnose illness and deal with the spirits behind it. Dharani Penu, the earth goddess, is honored with animal sacrifice at the major festivals. Colonial officials knew the wider Kondh for the meriah, a human sacrifice to the earth that British campaigns suppressed in the mid-nineteenth century, after which animal offerings took its place. Clans are patrilineal and exogamous, so every marriage joins two lineages. Unmarried girls sleep in a shared dormitory, the adasbeta, where young men from other clans come to sing and court. Girls also embroider the kapdaganda, an off-white shawl stitched in green, red and yellow, as a gift for brothers and sweethearts.
Niyamgiri became an international cause in the 2000s, when a bauxite mine was planned on the range to supply Vedanta's alumina refinery at Lanjigarh, at the foot of the hills. The Dongria framed the fight as a defense of Niyam Raja himself. In 2013 India's Supreme Court ruled that local village councils should decide whether mining would harm their religious and cultural rights. Twelve councils met, all twelve refused, and the environment ministry rejected the mine the following year.
