About Djab Wurrung People
The Djab Wurrung are the people of the country around Ararat in western Victoria. It is a land of granite hills, volcanic plain and creek flats that rises into the eastern ranges of Gariwerd, the mountains colonists renamed the Grampians. Like their neighbors, they are defined by language and land together. The second half of the name, wurrung, is a word for mouth or speech found across the languages of central and western Victoria. Belonging meant speaking this language and holding rights through one of the local clans that shared out the country. Those clans married, traded and held ceremony with the Jardwadjali to the west, who share much of Gariwerd with them, and with the peoples of the plains to the south.
Djab Wurrung is a Kulin language of the Pama-Nyungan family, and its closest relative is Jardwadjali. Within a few generations of colonization, children no longer grew up speaking it. Much of what survives sits in nineteenth century word lists, including the vocabulary that Western District settler James Dawson published in 1881 under the spelling Chaap Wuurong. Place names such as Langi Ghiran hold more of it, and anyone reclaiming the language today works from those records.
Thomas Mitchell's 1836 expedition opened the district, and within a few years squatters' sheep runs covered the plains. The sheep ate out the murnong, the yam daisy that had been a staple food, while frontier violence and disease cut the population hard. The gold rushes of the 1850s then brought thousands of miners to Ararat and Stawell. Many survivors ended up on government reserves and missions. Christianity arrived there on top of beliefs about ancestral beings such as Bunjil, the eaglehawk creator figure known across much of Victoria. Those older beliefs still shape how Djab Wurrung people talk about their country.
Many Australians first heard the name because of a stretch of the Western Highway between Buangor and Ararat.
