About Churu People
The Churu are highland people who speak a language from the coast. They live in the hills and river valleys of Vietnam's southern Central Highlands, mostly in Lam Dong province around Don Duong and Duc Trong. Their language is Chamic, a branch of the Austronesian family, and it ties them to the Cham of the old coastal kingdom of Champa, not to most of their mountain neighbors. Churu tradition and most historians trace their ancestors to Cham communities that moved up from the lowlands into the hills. Vietnam's 2019 census counted about 23,000 Churu, one of the smaller of the country's officially recognized peoples.
You can see that history in daily life. Chru, as the language is often written, is closely related to Roglai, Jarai and Rade. The Koho who surround the Churu speak a language from a completely different family, and many Churu speak Koho and Vietnamese as well. Many highland peoples practiced shifting cultivation. The Churu instead became known for irrigated wet rice: they dammed streams and cut channels across the valley floor, farming methods usually credited to Cham influence. After 1975, large numbers of lowland Vietnamese farmers moved into Lam Dong, and the Churu became a minority in valleys they had farmed for generations.
