Parashurama, the myth goes, found the coast he had raised from the sea empty of priests, so he took fourteen corpses washed up from a wreck, burned them and restored them to life as Brahmins. Chitpavan is read as pure from the pyre. Rival Brahmin communities on the inland plateau repeated the same tale for centuries as a slur, proof that these were latecomers of doubtful origin. The Chitpavans answered with the name they mostly use themselves, Konkanastha, meaning simply of the Konkan, and with fourteen gotras tracing to those fourteen founders.
For most of their history they were not grand. They were priests and small cultivators in a hard, wet, hilly country with thin soil. That changed in 1713, when Balaji Vishwanath, a revenue clerk from Shrivardhan, was made Peshwa, chief minister to the Maratha king at Satara. The office turned hereditary in his family, and within a generation the Peshwas rather than the kings ran the Maratha state from Pune. Chitpavan accountants, envoys and commanders moved inland behind them. When the British ended the Peshwai in 1818 the community lost the state but kept the habit of administration, moved early into English education, and filled the courts, colleges and newspapers of Pune and Bombay. The nineteenth century reform argument and the nationalist argument were both largely fought between Chitpavans: Ranade and Agarkar and Gokhale on one side of various lines, Tilak on another. In 1948 the assassin of Gandhi was a Chitpavan from Pune, and mobs burned Chitpavan houses and shops across western Maharashtra. Many rural families left the land then and did not go back.
Today they speak Marathi and live mostly in cities, in Maharashtra and in a wide professional diaspora. Chitpavani, the community's own dialect, has nearly died out. The Parashurama temple near Chiplun still draws them back to the coast, and vegetarianism, unusual on a fishing shore, remains a marker most households keep.
