About Cheq Wong People

For generations they lived by shifting cultivation, blowpipe hunting, fishing and collecting rattan and other forest products to trade outward. Resettlement schemes, logging and the limits of the reserve have since moved most families into permanent villages. Wage work now sits alongside time in the forest rather than replacing it.
The Cheq Wong became unusually well known in anthropology through the fieldwork of Signe Howell, who began living among them in the late 1970s. Her account describes a world where people, animals, plants and unseen beings share one moral order, held together less by doctrine than by rules. The forest remains the landscape against which their rules, their stories and their sense of themselves were formed.
