The Dutch kept the structure after dismantling the sultanate in the 1820s, and it lasted until the provincial government dissolved the marga in the early 1980s. In the swampy lowlands downstream, the seasonal fishing rights to flooded meadows, oxbow pools and river bends, known as lebak lebung, are still put up for public auction, which makes the annual flood a matter of local business. Families grow rice on the floodplain, tap rubber on small holdings and eat well from the river. The village of Meranjat in Ogan Ilir gives its name to pindang Meranjat, a fish stew known across the province. Upstream, in the limestone country near Baturaja, the cave called Gua Putri is tied to the tale of Si Pahit Lidah, the bitter-tongued wanderer whose curses turned people to stone. People tell that story all over South Sumatra.
