About Cahuilla People
The Cahuilla are the people of Southern California's inland desert and mountain country, and the plainest way into their world is through water. Their homeland runs from the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountains through the San Gorgonio Pass and down into the Coachella Valley. Life there depended on knowing exactly where water came to the surface and what grew beside it. Desert Cahuilla dug walk-in wells to reach it. The hot springs at the center of Palm Springs were a Cahuilla place long before they were a resort, and the Agua Caliente Band's reservation still checkerboards the city.
Scholars group the people into Desert, Pass and Mountain Cahuilla, and each group lived off different foods. Mountain villages gathered acorns and pinyon nuts. Desert villages depended on mesquite pods and the fruit of the native fan palm, and roasted agave mattered wherever it grew. Society was split into two halves, Wildcat and Coyote, and people married across that line. Each lineage held its own territory, a ceremonial leader, a sacred bundle and a ceremonial house. The creation account turns on two creators, Mukat and Temayawet, and the mourning ceremony for the dead long stood at the center of ritual life.
The language, Ivilyuat, belongs to the Takic branch of Uto-Aztecan and sits closest to Cupeño and Luiseño. Very few people speak it fluently now. Much of what survives on paper goes back to Katherine Siva Saubel, a Cahuilla scholar who worked with linguists on its grammar and dictionary and co-founded the Malki Museum on the Morongo Reservation in 1964. Bird songs carry much of the rest. These long song cycles, sung to gourd rattles, tell of the people's origins and journeys, and a younger generation of singers has taken them up.
Spanish expeditions crossed Cahuilla country in the 1770s, but the missions never absorbed the inland people the way they absorbed the coast. The smallpox epidemic of 1862 and 1863 did far more damage. Reservations followed from the 1870s onward, small and scattered. Christianity, mostly Catholic, now sits alongside older ceremonial practice. One of those small bands, the Cabazon, won a 1987 Supreme Court case over bingo and card games on its land. The ruling pushed Congress to pass the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act the following year and changed how tribes across the country make a living.
