About Cahokia People
The Cahokia were an Algonquian-speaking people of the Illinois Confederation who lived on the Mississippi floodplain opposite present-day St. Louis from at least the late 1600s until the early 1800s. By then the last of them had been absorbed into the Peoria and Kaskaskia. Their descendants belong to the Peoria Tribe of Indians of Oklahoma today. Their name is far better known than they are. It is attached to Cahokia Mounds, the great Mississippian city whose earthworks rose centuries before this tribe lived nearby, and people mix the two up constantly. The Cahokia did not build the mounds. The site took its name from a French colonial village, and the village took its name from them.
Their year turned on farming and hunting. Women raised corn, beans and squash on the fertile bottomland near large villages of long, mat-covered lodges. Communal bison hunts took whole communities out onto the prairies, and winter scattered families into smaller hunting camps. They spoke the Illinois form of Miami-Illinois, which was close enough to the speech of the Miami and Wea that these peoples understood one another. Much of what survives of the language comes from a huge French and Illinois dictionary compiled by Jesuit missionaries in the late 1600s and early 1700s. That record now anchors efforts to bring the language back into use.
In 1699 priests from the Seminary of Foreign Missions in Quebec founded the Mission of the Holy Family among the Cahokia and their neighbors the Tamaroa, and a French village grew up around it. Catholicism took root there alongside older belief in manitous, the spirit powers that moved through the Algonquian world. The eighteenth century cut their numbers hard: epidemics, wars with the Meskwaki and other enemies, and the strains of the fur trade all took a toll. In 1769 the Odawa leader Pontiac was killed at Cahokia by a Peoria man. Stories of devastating revenge against the Illinois have circulated ever since, though historians consider them overstated. In 1818 the Cahokia were one of five Illinois tribes named in the treaty at Edwardsville that gave up most of their homeland. Removal then pushed the survivors to Missouri, then Kansas, and finally Indian Territory, in what is now northeastern Oklahoma. Their name still marks the landscape around St. Louis, most famously on a city they had no hand in building.
