Bwende Erotic

The Bwende are a branch of the Kongo people. Outside Central Africa their name is tied to one extraordinary object: the niombo. A niombo was a funeral figure built around the smoke-dried body of an important elder. The body was wrapped in so many layers of cloth, over such a long time, that the bundle grew into a giant. It was given a head, a painted face and arms, then finished in red blankets. Mourners carried it to the grave with drums and dancing. The display made a plain statement about the dead person's rank. It also showed off the lineage that could afford that much cloth, which had long been a form of wealth in the Kongo world. The practice faded under missionary and colonial pressure in the twentieth century, and the few surviving figures now sit in museum collections. The instinct behind it has not gone away. As across the Kongo region, funerals are still among the largest social events in Bwende life, and burying a relative properly remains a serious family obligation.

Their homeland is the hill and savanna country north of the lower Congo River. It lies mainly in the Pool Department of the Republic of the Congo and reaches into Kongo Central in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. That split is a colonial leftover: when France and King Leopold II's Congo Free State settled their boundary in the 1880s, Bwende villages ended up on both sides. The Bwende speak their own dialect of Kikongo, a Bantu language, and it sits close to the Lari, Sundi and Manianga varieties spoken around them. The lines between these groups have always had more to do with clan, place and history than with any barrier of speech. Like other Kongo peoples, the Bwende traditionally trace descent through the mother's line, and clan ties still matter in marriage and inheritance.

Catholic and Protestant missions arrived in the colonial period, and Christianity is now the majority faith. It shares ground with independent churches that grew out of the Kongo region itself. Older ideas were never fully pushed aside. Respect for clan elders, visits to healers and the belief that misfortune can have a spiritual cause sit alongside Sunday services without much strain. Many Bwende now live in Brazzaville and Kinshasa, where they are often counted simply as Kongo, while the home villages remain the anchor of family identity.
