About Bhunjia People
The Bhunjia are a small forest-edge people of the Odisha and Chhattisgarh borderlands, and what sets them apart is a kitchen. Among the Chukutia Bhunjia, the branch living on the Sunabeda plateau in Odisha's Nuapada district, every household keeps a separate cooking hut, plastered with red earth and fenced off from the rest of the homestead. It is treated as the most sacred spot the family owns. If an outsider so much as touches it, the hut is burned and rebuilt. A daughter loses the right to enter her parents' kitchen once she marries out, and the Chukutia traditionally accept cooked food from no one outside the community. Few peoples in India draw the line between inside and outside so literally, in mud and thatch.
The tribe has two branches. The Chukutia, on the plateau, hold to the strict rules and are counted by the Indian government among its Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups. The Chinda Bhunjia live in the plains below and across the state line in Chhattisgarh's Gariaband area, farm alongside caste Hindu neighbors, and have relaxed most of the old restrictions. Marriage is organized around two exogamous halves, Netam and Markam, names shared with the neighboring Gond, and older accounts describe the Chukutia as partly descended from Gond and Halba families. The name itself is usually explained as meaning people sprung from the earth.
Their language, also called Bhunjia, is Indo-Aryan, a close relative of Halbi, the old market language of Bastar. It has a few thousand speakers, nearly all of whom also use the western Odia or Chhattisgarhi of their neighbors. Religion is a village-level Hinduism built around local powers rather than the big temple gods. Sunadei, the goddess of the plateau, comes first, and a village priest handles her rites on behalf of everyone.
Livelihood is a mix of rain-fed farming on small plots, gathering mahua flowers, tendu leaf and other forest produce for sale, and wage labor. The plateau lies within the Sunabeda Wildlife Sanctuary, so the forest the Chukutia depend on is also regulated land, and questions of forest access hang over the villages. Schools, roads and a dedicated development agency have arrived in the last few decades. Younger Bhunjia move between the plateau and the market towns with ease, but the red kitchen still stands in most Chukutia yards.
