About Assin People
The Assin are an Akan people of Ghana's Central Region, and much of who they are comes down to where they live. Their forest country lies on the old trade road between Kumasi and the coast, with the Fante toward the sea and the Asante beyond the Pra River to the north. Towns like Assin Fosu, Assin Manso and Assin Praso sit on or near that route. Today it is a highway running through cocoa farms, oil palm and patches of regrown forest. The Assin speak a form of Twi that Fante speakers on one side and Asante speakers on the other can follow, so language has rarely divided them from their neighbors the way politics did. They are split into two traditional states, Assin Apimanim and Assin Attandanso, each with its own paramount chief. Like other Akan, they trace family and inheritance through the mother's line and belong to clans that also run through the mother's side. They treat the stool as the sacred seat of a chief's office. Most Assin today are Christian, and every town has its churches, but people still pour libation to the ancestors at funerals and when a chief is installed. Funerals are still the biggest social occasions, pulling relatives home from Accra, Kumasi and abroad.
Living on the road between two powers has never been quiet. By the eighteenth century the Assin were under Asante rule. In the early 1800s a quarrel among Assin chiefs ended with some of them fleeing to the Fante for shelter. In 1806 Asante armies chased them south to the coast and attacked the British fort at Anomabu. The Assin later came under British protection, and in 1874 Praso, at the Pra crossing, served as a staging post for the British march on Kumasi. The heaviest memory belongs to Assin Manso. Captives being marched to the castles at Cape Coast and Elmina were bathed there in a stream called Donkor Nsuo, the slave river, before the last stretch of the walk. In 1998 the remains of two people of African descent were brought back from the United States and Jamaica and reburied beside it. Since then the site has drawn visitors from the diaspora, above all around Emancipation Day. It is also simply a stream in an Assin town, and its history belongs to the people who live there as much as to those who come looking for it.
