About Assateague People
The Assateague were an Algonquian-speaking people who lived on the Atlantic side of the Delmarva Peninsula, in what is now Worcester County, Maryland, and nearby parts of Delaware and Virginia, until colonial pressure scattered them in the 1700s; their descendants live on among the Nanticoke of southern Delaware. Their location set them apart. The Nanticoke and Pocomoke looked west to the Chesapeake, but the Assateague held the ocean side: the barrier islands, the shallow bays behind them, and the wooded land reaching back toward the upper Pocomoke River.
Life followed the water and the seasons. Villages planted corn, beans and squash. The bays gave them oysters, clams, fish and waterfowl, and the inland woods gave them deer. Almost none of their language was ever written down, but it was almost certainly Eastern Algonquian and close to Nanticoke. That branch was a chain of related languages that once ran along the coast from the Carolina sounds to the Maritimes. Their religious life is barely documented, because English record keepers wrote about land, boundaries and grievances, not belief.
Colonial Maryland treated the Assateague as one of the stronger nations on the lower Eastern Shore. As tobacco planters pushed into the region in the second half of the 1600s, a familiar pattern took hold: disputed land patents, English hogs and cattle roaming through unfenced Native fields, and treaties that fixed boundaries only until the next round of surveys. The colony eventually recognized a reserved tract on the upper Pocomoke River, where their town of Askiminokonson stood near present-day Snow Hill. Settlers kept pressing on it anyway.
From the late 1600s on, Assateague families left in stages. Many moved north to the Indian River in Sussex County, Delaware, where a Native community held on through generations of legal and social pressure. Others joined the Nanticoke migrations up the Susquehanna into Pennsylvania and on into Iroquois country in New York and Ontario, where they were absorbed into larger nations.
Today most people know the name from a place. Assateague Island, with its national seashore and its well-known wild horses, carries the name along the Maryland and Virginia coast, a reminder that this shore had a people long before it had a park.
