About Yuezhi People
The Yuezhi were a nomadic people of the first millennium BC who grazed horses and sheep in the Hexi Corridor of present-day Gansu, China, until the Xiongnu drove them west in the 170s BC. Their descendants founded the Kushan Empire in Bactria and northern India, and the name drops out of the record after the second century AD. Everything known about them comes from other people. Chinese chroniclers gave them the name Yuezhi, and the Yuezhi left no writing of their own, so their language is still argued over, with Tocharian and Iranian, both Indo-European, the usual candidates. Before the disaster they were the jade brokers of the far west, moving Tarim jade and horses toward the Chinese states, and Han historians credited them with more than a hundred thousand mounted archers.
The Xiongnu ruler Modu broke them around 176 BC. His successor Laoshang killed the Yuezhi king and, in a detail the Chinese sources return to, had the skull made into a drinking cup. The people split. The Lesser Yuezhi stayed in the Qilian Mountains and folded into the Qiang tribes over the following centuries. The Greater Yuezhi went west through the Ili valley, pushed the Saka out of their pastures, were pushed in turn by the Wusun, and by about 130 BC sat on the Amu Darya with Bactria under their control and the Greek kingdom there finished. Emperor Wu of Han sent the envoy Zhang Qian to propose a joint war of revenge. After ten years as a Xiongnu captive he reached them and found a settled, prosperous people who politely declined. His report home is the founding document of the Silk Road, and it exists because of the Yuezhi.
In Bactria the Greater Yuezhi divided into five principalities under chiefs the Chinese called xihou, a title later familiar as yabghu. About a century later one of them, the Guishuang, absorbed the others under Kujula Kadphises and became the Kushan dynasty, which ruled from the Oxus to the Ganges, struck coins in Greek script, wrote in Bactrian, and did as much as anyone to carry Buddhism into China. Sculpture from Khalchayan in Uzbekistan, attributed to the Yuezhi elite, shows lean, mustached men in belted coats, some with skulls elongated by binding in childhood. Whether the Yuezhi were kin to the Tocharian speakers of the Tarim Basin remains open, and the answer decides who spoke the easternmost Indo-European language of antiquity: perhaps the people who reshaped Asia by losing a war.
