About Wopkaimin People
The Wopkaimin are a small Mountain Ok people whose ancestral forest sits on top of a major copper and gold deposit, and that one fact has driven their recent history. Their country lies in the Star Mountains of Papua New Guinea's Western Province, near the Indonesian border. It is steep, rain-soaked ridge country around the upper Ok Tedi and the headwaters of the Fly River. Their name ends in -min, like the names of the neighboring Telefolmin and Tifalmin. That ending is the usual Mountain Ok way of naming a people.
Their language belongs to the Ok family, part of the wider Trans-New Guinea grouping. It links them to a chain of highland communities that also share much of their ritual life. Before the mine, daily life turned on shifting gardens of taro, a crop that mattered in ritual as well as in the kitchen. People also raised pigs, grew pandanus and hunted marsupials, birds and cassowary. Men's houses kept ancestral relics and hosted a graded series of male initiations. These belonged to a Mountain Ok religious tradition that looks back to the ancestress Afek. Sacred knowledge was revealed to young men step by step and kept from women and the uninitiated.

Outside contact came late. Kennecott prospectors found copper at Mount Fubilan in the late 1960s, and the Ok Tedi mine began production in 1984. Within a generation, people raised in scattered hamlets were living next to Tabubil, a company town with roads, an airstrip, wage jobs and far more newcomers than Wopkaimin. The mine brought compensation, schooling and cash. It also took garden land and hunting forest for the pit, the waste dumps and the township. The best-known damage came from mine waste sent down the Ok Tedi and Fly rivers, and it fell hardest on lowland peoples downstream. The Wopkaimin, though, own the land where the mine begins, and much of their dealing with the company and the state runs through that position.
Most Wopkaimin today are Christian, and the men's house cult has faded. Clan ties to particular ground still decide who holds rights and who is owed. Many move between village gardens and paid work in town. Few people live as directly with what a global mine does to a homeland, and the Wopkaimin still treat that land as home.
