About Fore People

When someone died, women and the children who stayed with them ate the body as an act of mourning, which kept the dead among their own kin. The cause turned out to be a prion, and Gajdusek shared a Nobel Prize in 1976 for the research. Colonial officers and missions ended the practice in the 1950s, but the disease could take decades to appear, so deaths continued into the 2000s. Kuru is not the whole story. In older Fore life, men and initiated boys lived in men's houses, while women kept separate houses with the children and did much of the gardening. In the late 1960s, South Fore villagers took part in Paul Ekman's studies of facial expression. Today most Fore are Christian and many grow coffee, though talk of sorcery has not gone away.
