About Mek People
The Mek are a set of highland communities in Indonesian Papua. What holds them together is not a shared political identity but a family of closely related languages. The name comes from those languages, usually traced to a shared word for water or river, and many groups are still known by the valley they farm: the Eipo of the Eipomek, the Una, the Kimyal around Korupun, the Ketengban, and the people of Kosarek and Nalca. Their country is the steep eastern end of the central mountain range. The Yali and Dani live to the west, and the Ok-speaking peoples of the Star Mountains live to the east. The ridges are so sharp that the next valley over can be a full day's walk away, which helps explain why the Mek speak several languages rather than one.
Linguists divide the family into an eastern branch, with Eipomek, Una and Ketengban, and a western branch, with Kosarek Yale, Nalca and Korupun-Sela. Most place it within the large Trans-New Guinea family, though it is clearly distinct from the Dani languages next door. Indonesian is now the common language of school, church and trade.

The church is the center of village life, and translated scripture is a point of real pride in several valleys. Still, older ideas about ancestral spirits, forbidden places and the power of the men's house have not disappeared everywhere. The region now belongs to Highland Papua province, and most places can still be reached only by small plane or on foot.
