Schoorl studied the Muyu in the 1950s and gave them a lasting place in the literature for this economic drive. Muyu is an Ok language of the Trans-New Guinea family, usually divided into northern and southern varieties. Its closest relative is Yonggom, spoken just across the border in Papua New Guinea's Western Province. The two peoples are close enough that the international boundary runs through what is really one cultural zone, and marriage and kinship ties cross it freely.
